Public Enemy

Spike Lee’s film ‘Do The Right Thing’ was a key moment in hip hop culture. The motion picture featured an anthem: Public Enemy’s “Fight The Power”. Drawing inspiration from The Isley Brothers’ song with the same name from 1975, the new track was written at around the time that the Central Park Five were rounded up and eventually incarcerated for a crime that they did not commit. In 1989, Public Enemy had established itself as a force in hip hop. The group was basking in the critical acclaim afforded its previous album, ‘It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back’. “Fight the Power” was unleashed in between that second studio album and its follow-up ‘Fear Of A Black Planet’. Chuck D’s lyrics for the movie song maintained the rage and protest of the previous LPs, while taking a swipe at white America's heroes Elvis Presley and John Wayne. The track contains rage and frustration at the ills of society from the perspective of rap’s elders. In Public Enemy’s wake came acts such as: Eminem, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Cypress Hill, Wu-Tang Clan, Ice Cube, The Prodigy, Rage Against The Machine, DMX and The Chemical Brothers.
