100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1988

💥84 Where Is My Mind?

Pixies

SurferRosa.jpgAmerican alternative rock band Pixies formed in Boston in 1986. As had been the case with The Velvet Underground before them, few music punters were aware of the group when “Where Is My Mind?” was unleashed. To the minority that heard the track, it was impactful. Sessions for a debut album commenced in late 1987. ‘Surfer Rosa’ was produced by Steve Albini. The LP was released the following year on 4AD; the same label that had issued “Pump Up The Volume” earlier. Although sales were unspectacular, critics lauded the album and the Black Francis penned track “Where Is My Mind?”. Among the well-known acts that drew inspiration from it are: Radiohead, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Weezer and The Strokes. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was directly influenced by the music of Pixies. Albini was sought after as a producer on the strength of his work on ‘Surfer Rosa’, even helming the ‘In Utero’ album for Nirvana. Pixies would have a lasting effect on alt-rock in the 1990s, grunge and Brit-pop.
