CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS
THE TOP 100
#62 THE HAPPENING
THE SUPREMES
(1967)
Writers:Brian Holland; Lamont Dozier, Eddie Holland & Frank DeVol
The Supremes recorded "The Happening" as the title song from a motion picture that hit cinemas that year. The comedy starred Anthony Quinn, Milton Berle and Faye Dunaway. Frank DeVol scored the film and contributed to the composition of its title song. Brothers Eddie and Brian Holland were also involved, as was the 3rd member of the regular songwriting trio, Lamont Dozier. The latter 2 handled the track's production.
Along with its inclusion on the obscure film's soundtrack album, "The Happening" was featured on The Supremes' 'Greatest Hits' compilation. While the film is largely forgotten today, the song became yet another #1 hit for the female trio.
The disc marked a turning point in The Supremes' discography. This was to be the last #1 song penned by Holland/ Dozier/ Holland for Motown. The hit-making trio was soon to depart the label, dissatisfied with the amount of royalties they were being paid. "The Happening" was the final single where the group was billed as "The Supremes". Henceforth, the act was to be referred to as "Diana Ross and The Supremes"; elevating its lead singer. Furthermore, this was to be the final Supremes #1 single to feature founding member Florence Ballard. Motown sacked her and recruited Cindy Birdsong as her replacement.
This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A new song from the remaining Top 100 is added each weekday, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours for an update of the 2000.
