The 7 founding participants at the inaugural Eurovision in 1956 were joined by 3 other countries the following year. Austria was among the debuting nations. It secured its first victory in 1966 with the first song to include lyrics sung in German (with French). “Merci Chérie”, the winning entry, was performed by Ufo Jürgens. This was his third attempt at the ESC, having finished 6th in 1964 and 4th in 1965.

Austria had a long wait before it accomplished a second win. In 2014, Conchita Wurst proved an unforgettable and controversial victor with the popular entry “Rise Like A Phoenix”. The Contest returned to host city Vienna in 2015.
