#653 BACK TO BLACK Amy Winehouse
Born in 1983, English blue-eyed soul chanteuse Amy Winehouse would only enjoy a brief time in the spotlight, but few were unmoved by her vocal skill. Yes, she had problems with drugs and alcohol, but she possessed one of the most alluring jazz/ soul voices. That makes her untimely death in 2011 all the more tragic.
Debut album 'Frank' was issued in 2003. It was highly praised and received award nominations. Follow-up 'Back to Black' came out in late 2006. It was this album that catapulted Winehouse to star status (sadly coupled by much media surrounding her alcohol- fueled conduct).
The title track was penned by the singer with its producer Mark Ronson. He can also be heard playing the tambourine on the track. Winehouse delivers a mighty vocal: convincing and understated in places , while evoking memories of singers such as Dusty Springfield, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.
When America surrendered to Winehouse in 2007, she collected no less than 5 Grammy Awards in the same year (out of 6 nominations), including Song & Record of the Year wins for the autobiographical song "Rehab" the following year.
