In 1994, news broke that R. Kelly had wed 15 year old R&B singer Aaliyah. Controversy erupted. He spent the remaining years of that decade cleaning up his image and dropping most of the swagger in his sex-obsessed recording output. If one song transformed Kelly into an R&B artist with credibility, it was "I Believe I Can Fly" from the film 'Space Jam'. 
Kelly channelled his inner Marvin Gaye once again for the big ballad from his 'R.' double album, which was issued in 1998.  "If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time" was written and produced by him. Kelly also plays all the instruments on the recording. The single reached #12 Pop & 5 R&B in the US, #2 in Britain and made the top in Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
