#700 A CHANGE IS GONNA COME Sam Cooke
Sam Cooke gave the civil rights movement its most potent anthem just prior to his untimely death.  Inspired by Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind", Cooke was taking his music down new directions in 1963. Noticing that Dylan's protest composition had struck such a powerful chord, he penned his beautiful answer song, "A Change Is Gonna Come". 
Initially a gospel singer (with the renowned Soul Stirrers), Cooke was well equipped to not only write such a song, but to also deliver it with aplomb. It deals with the black community's struggles, but also offers hope. Cooke recorded the song for his 1964 LP entitled 'Ain't That Good News'. Unfortunately, he died from gunshot wounds aged just 33 in November. The precise circumstances of Cooke's murder remain unknown to this day. That the shooting of such an integral performer in the evolution of soul music was not properly investigated is a shameful indictment of America at that time. 
The track was issued as a single, charting in 1965. It made the Pop Top 40 and peaked at #9 on the US R&B charts. It has since been covered by some soul music luminaries that has included the likes of Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin.
