#657 WHAT BECOMES OF THE BROKENHEARTED Jimmy Ruffin
While younger brother David Ruffin became a legendary vocalist for Motown's Temptations, Mississippi-born Jimmy Ruffin carved out a solo career that spawned 1 of that label's best songs: "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted". The single was his 1st to make the US Pop chart. Released in 1966, it peaked at #7. The song was penned by William Weatherspoon, Paul Riser and James Dean (not to be confused with the actor of the same name). The former co-produced the recording with William Stevenson.
More people would have become aware of the song had it been recorded by Whitney Houston for inclusion in 'The Bodyguard'. That was the initial plan, but a decision was later made for the singer to cover Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" instead.  
Weatherspoon & Dean co-produced and co-wrote follow-up single "I've Passed This Way Before", which returned Ruffin to the Top 20. Subsequent releases struggled up the Billboard Hot 100. Among these singles was a duet recorded with brother David (who by now had left The Temptations) in 1970, a cover of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me". Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees co-wrote and produced Ruffin's chart comeback single; a Top 10 hit in 1980 entitled "Hold on to my Love".
