#654 IN THE NAVY Village People
Double entendre is the name of the game on this song about the benefits of joining the navy recorded by The Village People. Its disco beat draws you in with lyrics that, on first listen, sound innocuous. Given the group's gay origins and camp quality, its lines about new recruits can be interpreted differently; such is the writing talent of producers Jacques Morali, Henri Belolo and lead singer (the 'Policeman') Victor Willis. This was contained on the group's 'Go West / In The Navy' LP. Released in 1979, the single topped the Dutch and Canadian charts and peaked at #2 in the UK, #3 US, #7 in Australia and in New Zealand.
