#667 HEY BOY, HEY GIRL The Chemical Brothers
The Chemical Brothers is a duo comprising Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands. Starting as DJs, the two decided to form a recording act in Manchester in 1989. They ushered in the big beat movement of the dance music of the 1990s. Initially, the duo was known as the Dust Brothers, but litigation forced a name change to the Chemical Brothers.
"Hey Boy, Hey Girl" was released in 1999. Written and produced by the duo, the techno hit features a sample from "The Roof is on Fire" by Rockmaster Scott & The Dynamic Three. "Hey Boy" was included on the duo's 'Surrender' album. The single peaked at #3 in Britain, #4 in Ireland and #10 in New Zealand. The Chemical Brothers continue recording to this day.It remains one of the most accessible techno crossover tracks.
#666 SPOOKY Dusty Springfield
Written by Harry Middlebrooks Junior and Mike Shapiro, "Spooky" is Dusty Springfield at her coolest. She delivers the song as if in a smoky club, exuding sultriness. Recorded in Britain in 1968, this was a remake. Shapiro - as Mike Sharpe - had recorded the original version as an instrumental in the previous year. Classics IV recorded a cover the same year as Springfield, and scored the biggest hit with their interpretation, peaking at #3 in the US. Dusty's version was not issued as a single.
#665 MAD ABOUT YOU Sting
Sting has carved out a successful solo career quite separate from his other life- as a member of The Police. Since that group's split in 1984, he has released an impressive body of work in a solo capacity. This has included "Fragile", "If You Love Somebody (Set Them Free)", "They Dance Alone" and "Russians".
"Mad About You" was lifted as a single from his 1991 album 'The Soul Cages'. All of its tracks were penned by the singer. Hugh Padgham co-produced the album with Sting. The instrumentation sets this song apart from others in his solo songbook. He is still performing and recording; having released a new album entitled 'The Last Ship' in 2013.
