TAMMI
TERRELL
Tammi Terrell's inclusion among this list of 200 acts is for her duets with Marvin Gaye. Although she cut several tracks for Motown as a soloist, it is for her magical collaborations with him that she is best remembered. Gaye and Terrell together established a new benchmark for duets.
Tomasina Montgomery was born in Philadelphia in 1945. She began performing while still in her teens. In 1961, producer Luther Dixon discovered the singer. She was signed up by Scepter Records and cut discs as Tammy Montgomery. Next, James Brown noticed her talent and added her to his live revue as well as his Try Me label.
In 1965, Berry Gordy Jr. caught her performing with Jerry Butler. He signed her up on his Motown label. Her initial solo singles fared poorly, but when she was teamed up with Gaye, the result was thrilling.
Gaye had already cut duets with Mary Wells and Kim Weston. The chemistry between him and Tammi Terrell (as she was now recording as) was genuine and powerful.
Together, they recorded some timeless duets, including: "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Your Precious Love", "You're All I Need To Get By" and "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing".
During this golden period, Terrell was plagued by health issues. She endured migraines. In 1967, Terrell collapsed into Gaye's arms while they performed on stage. She was then diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Terrell underwent hours of painful surgery. She had to retire from live performances but continued recording with Gaye. As her health deteriorated, an uncredited Valerie Simpson replaced her on their collaborations.
After 8 operations, Terrell was left partially paralysed and with memory loss. On March 16, 1970 the 24 year old singer died. Gaye never recovered from his grief.
