CANDLE IN THE WIND
“…Goodbye Norma Jean,
from the young man
in the 22nd row,
who sees you as
something more than sexual,
more
than our Marilyn Monroe...”
"Candle In The Wind" remains a cherished signature song in Elton John's canon. The lyrics, written by John's collaborator Bernie Taupin, pay tribute to the screen legend Marilyn Monroe.
Born Norma Jean Baker, the beauty gained immortality as an icon of the silver screen. Monroe's life was tragic; the circumstances surrounding her death remain a mystery to this day.
A victim of exploitation and dismissed as nothing more than a sex symbol, "Candle In The Wind" is sung from the perspective of a true fan. He sees past her sex appeal and beauty. To this admirer, she is a vulnerable victim of fame.
The song was originally heard on John's 1974 album 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". It was revised in 1997 as a tribute to another icon that met a tragic end: Princess Diana.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be
added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
