BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
See Saw
During the 1960s, Atlantic Records was an integral R&B label with a roster that included such legends as Otis Redding, Booker T & The MGs, LaVern Baker, Percy Sledge, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, Ruth Brown, The Drifters and The Coasters. Another significant talent was Aretha Franklin. At Atlantic, she established herself as a highly influential R&B singer. In time, she was crowned the Queen of Soul.
In 1968, Franklin unleashed the 'Aretha Now' album. This successful LP included the track "See Saw". It reached the Top 15 on the Pop and Soul charts in the U.S.A.
The track was written by Steve Cropper and Don Covay. The latter recorded the original version, releasing it as a single in 1965. His take peaked at #5 on the American Soul Chart and bubbled under the Pop Top 40. It also served as the title track of his 'See-Saw' album. Both songwriters were also on the Atlantic roster.
