BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft
In 1977, The Carpenters strayed from the duo's usual fare with the sci-fi themed single "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft". The track commences with a humorous intro. A radio DJ takes a call on his request show. When the disc jockey asks the caller for his song choice, an alien voice responds.
The song was featured on the Carpenters' 'Passage' LP, also released that year. While the single only reached #32 in America, it peaked at #9 in Britain and Canada. On the Australian chart, the disc made #13.
Richard Carpenter produced the siblings' cover of the song. The original version was written, produced and performed by Klaatu. The group's debut album '3:47 EST' included the track which was issued as a single in 1976.
Around this time, rumours began circulating that the band's name was an alias for The Beatles. It later emerged that Klaatu was in fact a Canadian group. Its version of "Calling Occupants..." dented the charts in North America, but failed to crack the Top 40.
