MARY
J. BLIGE
Mary J. Blige was born in The Bronx, New York in 1971. She had a difficult childhood. Her stepfather got a taped performance by Blige to the CEO at Uptown Records. This led to an association with Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs. Together, they started working on her 1992 debut album 'What's The 411?' The album reached #6 in America and produced 2 R&B #1s: "You Remind Me" and "Real Love". The latter became her first Top 10 hit on the Pop chart.
Follow-up album 'My Life' drew from her personal experiences. The result of struggles in her personal and professional life, the album expanded her audience.
"Not Gon' Cry" from the 'Waiting To Exhale' soundtrack gave her another R&B #1 and peaked at #2 Pop in 1996. The following year, 'Share My World' debuted at #1 in America. This album marked a departure from Combs with Blige forming ties with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
She increased the distance from rap on her soul flavoured 'Mary'. Released in 1999, the album included "Give Me Love" and "As". The latter was a duet with George Michael. Another track, "Deep Inside" sampled Elton John's "Bennie And The Jets".
'No More Drama' followed in 2001, reaching #2. This album spawned "Family Affair" and the title track. The former topped both the Pop and R&B charts.
A reunion with Combs produced the 2003 album 'Love & Life'. This album returned Blige to #1. 'The Breakthrough', issued 2 years later, also reached #1 and contained the hits "Be Without You" (another R&B #1) and "One" (recorded with U2). In 2007, 'Growing Pains' gave Blige another #1 album.
Subsequent albums have all reached the Top 10. Her most recent was 'Strength Of A Woman', released in 2017 which peaked at #3.
