Elvis Costello penned the original lyrics for "The Comedians". The track appeared on his 1984 album with The Attractions entitled 'Goodbye Cruel World'. When Roy Orbison recorded a remake, Costello wrote new lyrics for the legendary performer.
No doubt influenced by The Big O's operatic singing style and storytelling, the new verses radically transformed the song.
Orbison's "The Comedians" was included on his 1989 album 'Mystery Girl'. The revised lyrics tell the story of a man at a carnival with his partner. Alone on the ferris wheel, he spots her flirting with another man. He is left heartbroken as she walks off with the new man.
