Neil Diamond wrote "Shilo" years before he became a leading figure in popular music. In 1970, he was suddenly a hit-maker in the wake of successful singles like "Sweet Caroline" and "Holly Holly". A re-tweaked version of "Shilo" was issued and the single was finally a hit.

The character referred to in the title is an imaginary friend of the lonely protagonist. He longs for companionship, but searches in vain for friends. Even his father says he is too busy to spend time with him. So, Shilo is a creation of the boy's imagination. Unlike everyone else, Shilo is always nearby and willing to spend time with him.
