British group Pulp released "Common People" in 1995 and the single raced to #2 on the UK chart. Members of the band wrote the song. 
Its lyrics revolve around a rich girl keen to slum it with poor folk. She is attracted to the mundane and spartan existence but, as lead singer Jarvis Cocker sings, she can never truly relate to the poor. He explains that if she ever grows tired of the squalor, she can always call her wealthy father to come to her rescue; something that the poor cannot elect to do.
