On her 'Silk & Soul' album, Nina Simone included a remake of "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free". Her 1967 recording soon became a civil rights anthem.
The song was written by Billy Taylor and Dick Dallas. In 1963, the former's original recording was issued. Its lyrics deal with the need for freedom shared by all humanity. There is a longing for autonomy, equality and liberty throughout the verses. The Lighthouse Family covered the song in 2001 as part of a medley with U2's "One".
