BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG
These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Janis Joplin's thunderous execution of "Cry Baby" is a defining example of her vocal power. It remains a key track on her posthumously released album 'Pearl'. Joplin died in October 1970 of a heroin overdose. The LP was issued 3 months later. Her blues/ rock interpretation of the song radically transformed it. Today, Joplin's take is the definitive recording of the song.
The original version was cut by R&B group Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters. Released in 1963, the single reached #1 on the US Soul Chart and peaked at #4 Pop. Over the years, the original has become an obscure memory, forever eclipsed by Joplin's impassioned remake.
