Billy Joel released 'Turnstiles' in 1976. The album included the single "James". Joel's lyrics involve 2 friends that have chosen different destinies. The protagonist has followed his dreams and fulfilled his musical ambitions. On the other hand, the James referred to in the song title has forsaken his personal aspirations in order to please his family.
Joel questions James' choice. The latter has satisfied his family's expectations but is in danger of never realizing his own goals.
"James" is a song that many can relate to, especially those that have sacrificed their own desires in order to appease others.
