Christina Aguilera and Mark Ronson had the germ of an idea for a song like "Hurt". They described their concept to songwriter Linda Perry. The latter was mourning her deceased father and completed the writing of the song, drawing inspiration from her grief .
Aguilera included "Hurt" on her 2006 album 'Back To Basics'. Released as a single that year, the disc reached #1 in Europe and made the Australian Top 10.
The heart wrenching ballad describes the protagonist's wish for an opportunity to speak one final time with a lost loved one. Each line conveys deep regret and loss.
