FRANK
SINATRA
The legendary singer Frank Sinatra was born in New Jersey in 1915. His vocal style remains the yardstick in popular music. Sinatra's career began in 1935 as a member of the Hoboken Four. They won a radio talent contest and this led to paid jobs.
Sinatra's recording debut was in 1939 with Harry James' Orchestra. Bandleader Tommy Dorsey poached him for his orchestra. Sinatra sang on several of its hits, including the #1 "I'll Never Smile Again" in 1940. This also led to movie roles with the orchestra.
By 1942, Sinatra began tentative steps as a soloist. His first under his own name was the #16 single "Night And Day". He also worked on various radio shows.
The remainder of the 1940s saw Sinatra dominate radio, films and music charts. He switched from Columbia to Capitol Records in 1952. His performance in the 1953 film 'From Here To Eternity' earned Sinatra an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
His next recording phase raised the bar. Sinatra's albums with arranger Nelson Riddle presented the singer at his best. Together, they created the first 'concept' albums, beginning with 'Songs For Young Lovers' in 1954.
He won the Album of the Year Grammy Award for 1959's 'Come Dance With Me!'. In 1960, he launched his own label- Reprise Records. The new decade saw Sinatra attempt to hold his ground in the wake of rock 'n' roll as Elvis Presley and then The Beatles dominated the pop charts.
A performer of Sinatra's stature never loses relevance. He proved he could still reach #1 in 1966 with "Strangers In The Night" and again the following year duetting with daughter Nancy on "Somethin' Stupid". In 1980, he added a new signature song to his canon, "Theme From New York, New York". He peaked at #2 and #5 in the U.S.A. and Britain respectively with his 'Duets' album in 1993. 'Duets II' followed the next year.
On turning 80 in 1995, Ol' Blue Eyes retired from performing. The Chairman of the Board passed away in Los Angeles on May 14, 1998. Sinatra remains an icon to this day.
