BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
Don’t Know Much
Linda Ronstadt recorded "Don't Know Much" as a duet with Aaron Neville of The Neville Brothers. It was issued as a single in 1989. The ballad peaked at #2 in America, Britain and Australia. Their collaboration resulted in a Grammy Award. It was included on Ronstadt's 'Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind' album.
"Don't Know Much" was written by Tom Snow with married couple Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. The latter recorded the original version for his self-titled 1980 album.
Two remakes charted prior to the Ronstadt- Neville duet. In 1981, Bill Medley peaked at #88 with his interpretation. A cover by Bette Midler followed 2 years later. Her version, re-titled "All I Need To Know", reached #77. It was lifted off her 1983 'No Frills' album.
