JENNIFER
HUDSON
Jennifer Hudson was born in Chicago in 1981. She first performed in church. Her international breakthrough came via TV's "American Idol" in 2004. Hudson competed in the show's 3rd season, finishing in 6th place among the pack that included eventual winner Fantasia.
After the show's end that year, casting began for a film version of the musical "Dreamgirls". Hudson was announced as a member of the cast, in the role of Effie who sings the show-stopper "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going". For her portrayal, Hudson collected the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.
Tragedy followed. Her mother, brother and nephew were murdered by her brother-in-law. This delayed the release of her eponymous debut album. 'Jennifer Hudson' was eventually unleashed in 2008. It peaked at #2 in America and won a Grammy Award. That year, she also had a song included on the "Sex And the City' movie soundtrack ("All Dressed Up In Love").
Hudson contributed vocals to the "We Are The World 25 For Haiti" charity disc attributed to USA For Haiti during 2010. In 2011, the 'I Remember Me' album reached #2 Pop and R&B in America. Hudson continued acting.
Her 3rd album 'JHUD' was issued in 2014. This was a strong album with quality tracks such as "I Still Love You" and "It's Your World". The following year, she collaborated with Iggy Azalea on "Trouble", a #7 single in Britain.
Hudson recorded covers of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" (with Tori Kelly) and The Beatles' "Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight" for the 2016 'Sing!' film soundtrack. In 2017, she released "Remember Me" and was a coach on "The Voice UK".
