BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
When I
Need You
While often overshadowed by "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing", the ballad "When I Need You" was a major success on charts around the globe for British performer Leo Sayer.
Released in 1977, Sayer reached #1 in America, the UK and Canada with the love song. The single also made the Australian Top 10. Richard Perry produced the recording. The track was lifted off Sayer's hit album 'Endless Flight', which also included the aforementioned disco-flavoured single.
"When I Need You" was written by Carole Bayer Sager and Albert Hammond. The latter recorded the original version of the ballad. His interpretation was the title track from his 1976 album. This LP was produced by Paul Hardiman.
Other remakes of "When I Need You" have been cut by the likes of Celine Dion on her 1998 album 'Let's Talk About Love' and Rod Stewart on his 1996 ballad compilation 'If We Fall In Love Tonight'. Luther Vandross remade the song for his 1998 album 'I Know'. Cliff Richard made the UK Top 40 with his cover in 2007.
