BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
Yellow River
British group Christie reached #1 on the UK chart with "Yellow River" in 1970. As well as making #1 in various European countries, the single peaked at #23 in America.
In Australia, a local cover version by Jigsaw climbed to #5 that same year. Another remake by Autumn also made the Top 20 in that country. These domestic covers flourished because of a radio ban that affected airplay for many British releases.
Initially, The Tremeloes had recorded the song "Yellow River". It was intended for release as a single but the group shelved the idea. The band is best remembered for its 1967 UK #1 hit "Silence Is Golden". The Tremeloes' decision allowed Christie to score a chart topper instead.
