EMINEM
His recordings are dominated by offensive content, but there is no denying Eminem's immense talent as one of the leading white rappers. He has been an immense influence on hip hop since his breakthrough in 1999.
He was born Marshall Mathers in 1972. During his teen years, he moved to Detroit. The youth began rapping at 14 under the alias M&M. In time, his name had evolved into Eminem.
After stints in various groups, he formed D-12. By 1996, his solo debut album 'Infinite' was unleashed. Upon developing the Slim Shady alter ego, he began working on his next project- 'The Slim Shady EP'. He came to the attention of Dr Dre and their lucrative working relationship began. The first result was his breakthrough album 'The Slim Shady LP'.
Follow-up 'The Marshall Mathers LP' saw Eminem grow even bigger in stature. The content of his material attracted controversy. Many tracks were violent, misogynistic and homophobic. Despite this, Eminem was one of the most successful names in hip hop. "The Real Slim Shady" became his 1st British #1 single and reached #4 in America. "Stan" topped the charts in the UK and Australia. The parent album was a #1 in the US, Britain, Canada, part of Europe and in Australia.
Elton John helped dispell the accusations of homophobia, joining Eminem on stage at the Grammys to perform "Stan". Every one of his subsequent studio albums since then has reached #1 in both America and Britain.
Next, Eminem starred in '8 Mile'. The 2002 film was based on his life. "Lose Yourself" from the movie was his next global #1 and earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Eminem has continued topping charts with the singles: "Like Toy Soldiers", "Crack A Bottle", Not Afraid", "Love The Way You Lie" and "The Monster" (the latter 2 with Rihanna).
