100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1960
💥13 The Twist
Chubby Checker
There had been other dance crazes prior to the release of “The Twist”. Countless other songs about rock ‘n’ roll dance crazes followed, including “The Loco-Motion”, “The Hustle”, “Lady Bump” and “Mashed Potato Time”. None would trigger a worldwide reaction as mighty as Chubby Checker’s smash hit did. The song began as a 1958 B-side recorded by Hank Ballard & The Midnighters. Checker altered the song, downplaying its sexual references and injecting it with fun. “The Twist” was embraced by record buyers who took it all the way to #1. A year later, the song did something no other (non-seasonal) hit single has ever achieved: it returned to the charts and reclaimed the top position. Its phenomenal sales spawned several other “twist” songs, including “Twisting The Night Away” (Sam Cooke), “Peppermint Twist" (Joey Dee & The Starliters) and “Twistin’ Postman” (The Marvelettes). Even Chubby Checker milked the craze with a sequel disc: “Let’s Twist Again” in 1961. While other dance crazes around this time such as The Fly, The Watusi, The Jerk, The Pony and The Hucklebuck are long forgotten, “The Twist” is still remembered for its historical and cultural impact.
