100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1961
💥14 Crazy
Patsy Cline
Country music had already made stars out of the likes of Brenda Lee, Kitty Wells and, to a lesser extent, Skeeter Davis before Patsy Cline threw out the rule book. She managed to move between country and pop with a new attitude and ease. This began with country standards such as “Walkin’ After Midnight” and “I Fall To Pieces”. In 1961, Cline was recovering from a car accident. “Crazy” was a little-known song penned by Willie Nelson. When Cline recorded her version, she re-wrote that rule book. Producer Owen Bradley deserves credit for his expertise in crafting one of the defining songs of the genre. Floyd Cramer on piano and The Jordanaires’ back-up vocals also helped raise the bar for country crossover hits. Cline’s work is reflected in recordings by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Tammy Wynette, K.D. Lang, Barbara Mandrell, Crystal Gayle, Tanya Tucker and LeAnn Rimes. Despite her immense influence on country music, the singer’s career was abruptly interrupted. At the age of 30, Cline died in a plane crash on March 5, 1963.
