100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1964
💥21 You Really Got Me
The Kinks
The first version of “You Really Got Me” recorded by The Kinks was slower and lacked impact. This was to be the group from London’s third single release. The previous two had flopped. Lead singer Ray Davies came up with the lyrics. Shel Talmy produced the track. The song, powered by Ray's brother Dave Davies on guitar, sported a radical new attitude. He created a riff that was simply wild. The power chords inspired heavy rock and punk as well as influencing garage rock. Pete Townshend admitted the song inspired The Who’s debut smash “I Can’t Explain”. The single reached #1 in Britain and was a Top 10 hit in America.
