100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1965
💥23 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)
Otis Redding
Among the soul vocalists influenced by Sam Cooke was Otis Redding. In 1965, he released his landmark album ‘Otis Blue’. The album included covers of 3 Sam Cooke songs. The singer had recently died. Redding penned 3 of the album’s songs. One was “Respect”, which would become a signature song for Aretha Franklin. “Ole Man Trouble” opened the LP. Side One concluded with the ballad “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)”. Redding co-wrote the song with Jerry Butler. Its lyrics were tender but it was Otis’ vocals that made the track special. He sang it with grit and raw passion. This was no sweet song. It was a man pleading to a lover that is departing. Otis injected depth and masculinity that provided the song with authenticity. His approach would be emulated by countless others. As producer, Steve Cropper knew how to best utilize the skills of the Stax house band. His own guitar work stands out, alongside the pure magic served up by fellow session musicians drummer Al Jackson and bass player Donald “Duck” Dunn. ‘Otis Blue’ was a watershed album for the soul genre. Sadly, Redding was killed in a plane crash 2 years later. Despite being covered by numerous others, the Otis take on “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” is still regarded as the definitive version.
