100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

💥27 The Sounds of Silence

Simon & Garfunkel

SoundsSilence.jpgWhen Bob Dylan went electric, his radical action reverberated around the folk and rock scenes. It spawned the “folk rock” genre. This led to producer Tom Wilson revisiting a song recorded by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel for the 1964 album ‘Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.”. The original version of “The Sounds Of Silence” was an acoustic track. When the album flopped, the duo parted ways. Simon relocated to England. Months passed and Wilson decided to make some alterations to the Simon & Garfunkel original. He added electric guitar, bass and drums to the track. The new version was issued unbeknown to the duo. Initially, the two performers were unimpressed, but their attitude mellowed as the disc ascended the charts. It reached #1. Simon returned to the U.S.A. and the duo reunited. They went on to record several gems, including “Mrs. Robinson”, “I Am A Rock”, “America”, “The Boxer”, “Cecilia”, “Homeward Bound” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. Simon’s songs for the duo and his solo output were crucial in expanding the parameters of cultural influences in rock music. He exposed mainstream audiences to the music of the Incas (“El Condor Pasa”), South Africa (“Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes”) and Brazil (“The Obvious Child”) among others.
