100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1962
💥15 Misirlou
Dick Dale
If Dick Dale’s instrumental is known by younger generations, it is because of its use in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Pulp Fiction’ and / or its being sampled in the Black Eyed Peas’ hit “Pump It”. Few, however, would be aware of the track’s impact on rock ‘n’ roll. In the early 1960s, surf-rock was booming, led by Dale and his guitar. The origins of “Misirlou” (often also referred to as “Miserlou”) go back to the Middle East. Before changing his name, Dale was Richard Monsour. His father was Lebanese. Dale’s adaptation of “Misirlou” was a rare case of rock being mixed with other cultures. His guitar skills were also influential. Before Jimi Hendrix mesmerized the planet, Dale was playing his axe upside down and backwards. Dale’s staccato picking was unrivalled. Being a surfer, he aimed to replicate the feel of riding a wave. His frenzied playing style has also been cited as an influence on heavy metal music. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck, Chris Isaak and Eddie Van Halen evoke memories of “Misirlou”. Dale also helped push the Stratocaster and Fender’s amplifiers to new limits.
