100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1966
💥30 Good Vibrations
The Beach Boys
The Beatles’ experimentation in the studio inspired many acts on both sides of the Atlantic. In Britain, this was most evident in the music recorded by The Rolling Stones. Stateside, the Fab Four put pressure on The Beach Boys to match the group’s creativity. Brian Wilson aspired to match his Liverpudlian rivals. His ambitions grew loftier and resulted in classics from The Beach Boys that included “God Only Knows”, “California Girls” and “Good Vibrations”. The latter became the most expensive single ever made up to that time, costing over $50,000. It was largely the vision of Brian Wilson. He used many recording studios and over 90 hours of tape to realize his ambitious project. It also cost Wilson his sanity. Upon release, the disc attracted sales. It topped the charts and sold over a million copies. Decades after its inception, the song remains one of the best examples of pop music.
