James Brown

Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (album) - WikipediaAs the title suggests, James Brown had been around for some time, but he was about to mix things up. His 1965 single “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” took the R&B dynamo into the land of the funky groove. The Godfather of Soul is said to have spawned funk with this new track. Brown wrote it and produced the cut. His radical approach was to focus on the downbeat- the first and third beats of a bar. The lyrics talk about an older man mastering the hip dance moves of the time: the Jerk, The Twist, The Fly, The Boomerang, The Monkey and The Mashed Potato. Integral to the song’s impact were brothers Maceo (on saxophone) and (drummer) Melvin Parker. Brown would continue to explore funk’s possibilities. His work is one of the most widely sampled. Ultimately, Brown is cited as a major influence on disco, rap and hip-hop.
