100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1967
💥33 Light My Fire
The Doors
Shock rock is best represented by the likes of Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson. It all started with The Doors and, in particular, lead singer Jim Morrison. Here was one of rock’s first lead singers to overshadow the rest of the band. Morrison was seductive and mysterious while also menacing and volatile. “Light My Fire” saw the US underground rock scene collide with the mainstream. The concept was essentially Robbie Krieger’s, but each member added an integral ingredient to its beauty and power. Morrison injected it with an intoxicating sexual energy. Krieger blasts away on his electric guitar. John Densmore’s exotic and unique drumming adds to the track’s allure. Finally, it is Ray Manzarek’s magical organ work that makes the sonic experience incendiary. There are hints of psychedelia and proto-punk. The Doors would go on to record other notable classic tracks, (including “The End”, “Riders On The Storm”, “Touch Me” and “People Are Strange”) but the group will always be best remembered for “Light My Fire”.
