100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1965
💥24 (I Can’t Get No)
Satisfaction
The Rolling Stones
The first hit singles by The Rolling Stones were covers. By 1965, “The Last Time” was the first smash written by group members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It was the band’s third #1 single in the UK. That same year, the Stones unleashed one of the most exciting rock ‘n’ roll songs: “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”. The seed of the track came to Keith Richards who had passed out after a big night of intoxication. He woke up with the idea of the riff and the lyrics “I can’t get no satisfaction”. He recorded the idea and fell back to sleep. A horn section was planned to replace the riff, but this never eventuated. The rest of the song was built around that explosive riff, performed by Richards on a Gibson Maestro Fuzzbox. Jagger’s lead vocal was a radical new attitude: half disdain and half commentary on the current state of affairs. The carnal urgency of the lead vocals and Richards’ guitar skill made the song a new anthem for youth. From here on, the Stones would be raised to the level previously reserved only for The Beatles. The group would continue to evolve, exploring new sounds and themes. Among the best examples are tracks such as “Paint It, Black”, “As Tears Go By”, “Sympathy For The Devil”, “Wild Horses”, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “Gimme Shelter”. Unlike The Beatles, The Rolling Stones continued recording and touring decades after The Fab Four split in the early 1970s.
