THE GREATEST SONGS
MMI
The planet was stunned by the September 11 attacks on America as thousands lost their lives. Numerous countries supported the U.S. campaign to weaken the Taliban in Afghanistan. George W. Bush was sworn in as President of America. Anthrax-laced letters were sent to various U.S. media and government officials. ‘Gladiator’ dominated the Oscars. “The Producers” won numerous Tony Awards. Apple unleashed iTunes. The Leaning Tower of Pisa re-opened. Cinema audiences flocked to enjoy ‘Harry Potter & The Sorcerer’s Stone’, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ and ‘Shrek’.
Here are 100 songs representing the best music that was current during that year.
1
BOOTYLICIOUS
Destiny’s Child
The song introduced us to the new era of Destiny’s Child, name-checking the 3 members: Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams and Beyoncé Knowles. “Bootylicious” became an official word and was added to various modern dictionaries. The hit sampled the Stevie Nicks song “Edge Of Seventeen”. Its lyrics hint at the use of physical attributes, but the message was served up by confident women that were totally in control.
2
GET THE PARTY STARTED
P!nk
P!nk had been unhappy with the way she was being presented as an R&B/ pop clone, the feisty performer took control and developed her own individual sound and image. The new P!nk struck back with this party staple.
3
FALLIN’
Alicia Keys
This is the mighty love song that introduced the planet to the extraordinary talent of singer / songwriter Alicia Keys. The debut single preceded the ‘Songs In A Minor’ album.
4
DON’T STOP MOVIN’
S Club 7
This British pop group enjoyed a string of hits and a TV series.
5
SURVIVOR
Destiny’s Child
The tensions within Destiny’s Child resembled a reality TV show. “Survivor” turned those events into an empowering anthem that ushered in a new era for the girl group. Beyoncé was now the undisputed focal point.
6
CAN’T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD
Kylie Minogue
Australia’s pop princess Kylie Minogue scored a global smash with this unforgettable dance hit co-written by Cathy Dennis.
7
CRYING AT THE DISCOTHEQUE
Alcazar
Swedish group Alcazar emerged with this floor-filler that sampled “Spacer”, a song created by Chic’s funkmasters Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards.
8
NO MORE DRAMA
Mary J. Blige
Built around “Nadia’s Theme” used in the daytime TV soap opera “The Young & The Restless”, the Queen of Hip-Hop delivered one of her signature songs.
9
ORIGINAL SIN
Elton John
Songwriters Elton John and Bernie Taupin showed their talent had not diminished decades after first collaborating in the 1960s. This was one of the standouts on Elton’s ‘Songs From The West Coast’ album.
10
HIT ‘EM UP STYLE
(OOPS)
Blu Cantrell
The protagonist in this hit was so incensed by her cheating boyfriend that she decided to get even. This was no poor jilted woman dealing with a bad man. A great “revenge” song.
