100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1965

💥26 My Generation

The Who

The band pictured from above, looking up to the cameraAmerican rock ‘n’ roll may have been in a holding pattern, but on the other side of the Atlantic, edgy rock songs were being jettisoned around the planet. The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks and The Who all played a critical part in delivering an unruly and re-energized brand of rock music. The latter group did so with an incendiary song that encapsulated all that was powerful and radical in a song about rebellion. The original attempt at “My Generation” was slower. Lyricist Pete Townshend’s distorted axe and feedback transformed the song. He was complemented by John Entwhistle on bass and the mighty Keith Moon on drums. Roger Daltrey spits out the lyrics, including the immortal “I hope I die before I get old”. He stutters and growls. Little wonder that “My Generation” became an immediate anthem.
