100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1967

💥34 Respect

Aretha Franklin

It Was 50 Years Ago Today: Aretha Franklin Demands 'Respect' | REBEAT MagazineWhile on Columbia Records, Aretha Franklin built a reputation for her vocal skill, but the label under-utilised the power of her tonsils. She switched over to Atlantic Records, where she began to really stand out. Her label debut was with the album ‘I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You’. One of the songs recorded for the project was “Respect”, written by Otis Redding. He had released his original version 2 years prior.  Aretha sang the song from a new perspective: a woman demanding respect in her relationship. This was a radical move for any female, especially an African-American one. Aretha and her sister Carolyn Franklin helped re-arrange the song, adding segments such as “sock it to me” and “R-E-SP-E-C-T”. Most of the players on Otis’ original performed at the February 1967 recording session. King Curtis made the song memorable with his sax solo. Aretha’s 2 sisters (Carolyn and Erma) sand background vocals. Aretha herself played piano. Credit must also go to producer Jerry Wexler, arranger Arif Mardin and engineer Tom Dowd. The single reached #1 on both the US Pop and Soul charts. Aretha was crowned the Queen of Soul and has influenced countless others in her wake, including Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Roberta Flack and Jennifer Hudson. “Respect” also empowered women, paving the way for later anthems such as “I Am Woman”, “Independent Women” and “No Scrubs”.
