100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1966
💥29 Tomorrow Never Knows
The Beatles
By the mid-1960s, the charts were dominated by The Beatles. A lengthy string of hits had already established The Fab Four as a record-breaking group, led by #1s “She Loves You”, “Help!” and “Can’t Buy Me Love”. With 1965’s ‘Rubber Soul’ album, the band began to push music’s limits. They explored new themes as evidenced on “Nowhere Man” and grew more adventurous, introducing instruments previously never used on rock recordings such as the sitar on “Norwegian Wood”. In 1966, The Beatles ventured further with the ‘Revolver’ album. Utilising the skills and knowledge of producer George Martin, the group continued innovating. The best example of this was the watershed album track “Tomorrow Never Knows”. Although the LP’s closer, this was the first song recorded for the project. Here was a song that could never be replicated in a live setting. It was packed with ground-breaking studio wizardry. The Beatles had started maturing a couple of years earlier, but by now John, Paul, George and Ringo were accomplished musicians. On this track, the latter shines on drums. It drew from the band’s interest in Indian music and Lennon’s experimentation with LSD. George Harrison plays sitar and tamboura. The song begins with John Lennon inviting us to “turn off your mind, relax and float downstream”; a nod to Timothy Leary. Tape loops were used in a way never before tried. Among the sound effects created, was what seemed like seagulls screeching. Lennon’s vision for the song was realized and the gap between The Beatles and the group’s contemporaries widened.
