100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1964
💥20 The House Of The Rising Sun
The Animals
The Beatles opened the floodgates with “I Want To Hold Your Hand”. A succession of their own singles easily became transatlantic hits. Beatlemania made Liverpool the new epicentre of popular music. Suddenly, America was not the dominant nation in rock music. The Fab Four were followed by countless British acts, including Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Petula Clark and Lulu. By 1964, The British Invasion was in full swing. That year, a group from Newcastle, England scored a global #1 hit with a new interpretation of an American folk song dating back to the 17th century. The song, about a brothel located in New Orleans, was recorded in London and completed in just two takes. Mickie Most produced the cover version. The remake benefits greatly from Alan Price’s keyboard arrangement and Eric Burdon’s powerful lead vocal. This was a case of the Brits selling back to the Americans their own traditional music.
