100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1967
💥31 Strawberry Fields Forever
The Beatles
1967
saw the Beatles continue to take rock music into new directions, using studio
innovations and a limitless creativity. John Lennon came up with the concept of
“Strawberry Fields Forever” while filming ‘How I Won The War’ on location in
Almeria, Spain. The title refers to an orphanage located in Liverpool. Producer
George Martin worked on the track for 55 hours. Lennon wanted to combine 2
versions cut by the group. The segments were in a different key and tempo, but
Martin came up with a way to make it all work seamlessly. Both Lennon and McCartney
used the Mellotron for the first time on a Beatles record: another innovation
featured on the track. The group used it to create a flute-like sound out of
tape loops. Issued as a double A-sided single with “Penny Lane”, the song
became a watershed psychedelic rock recording and a smash hit.
