ALL THE EUROVISION COUNTRIES: (45-49). More: tomorrow.

Caffè Lattè looks back on:

ALL THE

EUROVISION

COUNTRIES

The Eurovision Song Contest was first held in 1956. Back then, only 7 countries participated. In the decades since, dozens of other nations have joined the ESC family. As Europe changed, countries faded into history as new countries and new names emerged. Eurovision itself has expanded beyond the European continent; to Africa, the Middle East and the Southern Hemisphere.

Our spotlight looks back on every country that has competed – in chronological order.

2007

The 2007 Eurovision Song Contest was significant for two main reasons. Held in Helsinki, Finland, a record-breaking 42 countries participated. Two new countries joined the Eurovision family while Serbia and Montenegro competed as separate independent countries (they had previously participated as one). One of these 4 new additions made such a strong debut, that it won the 2007 Contest.

XLVI

GEORGIA

The Semi-Final was expanded to allow 28 countries a chance to qualify for the Grand Final in 2007. From these entries, the 10 highest scorers progressed to the big Final. Georgia was one of the ten. Its best result is ninth position, accomplished twice: in 2010 (with “Shine”) and 2011 (“One More Day”). 2024 will be Georgia’s 17th participation. Its entry will be performed by Nutsa Buzaladze in Semi-Final 2.

XLVII

MONTENEGRO

Montenegro had previously competed at Eurovision as one with Serbia. Both came back in 2007, but this time as two distinct nations. Montenegro failed to qualify for the Grand Final that year. In its own right, the country has only progressed into the Grand Final twice. In 2015, Montenegro achieved its best result: thirteenth place with “Adio”, performed by Knez. The nation has been absent from the Contest since 2022, reportedly for financial reasons.

XLVIII

SERBIA

Serbia’s first participation in its own right resulted in a win. This was attained with the entry “Molitva”, performed by Marija šerifović and remains the only debuting country to win with its inaugural song since Switzerland’s triumph in the first Contest in 1956. Serbia has participated under three different names: Yugoslavia, Serbia & Montenegro and in its own right. 2024 will see its 17th entry competing in the first Semi-Final.

XLIX

CZECH REPUBLIC

The Czech Republic broke away from Slovakia and gained independence in 1993. The new nation finally debuted at Eurovision in 2007. Its inaugural entry failed to qualify for the Grand Final. Since 2023, it has competed as Czechia.

After four unsuccessful years, Czechia finally qualified for a Grand Final in Sweden in 2015. Three years later, the country achieved its best result thus far: 6th with “Lie To Me”, performed by Mikolas Josef. In 2024, “Pedestal”, by Akio, will compete in Semi-Final 2 as Czechia’s 13th ESC entry.
