TOP 1200 CHOICE TRACKS

#656 HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTHM STICK Ian Dury
Ian Dury was born in 1942. The English lad contracted polio at 7 years of age. He went on to pursue art, teaching painting until he formed a band in 1970. Kilburn & the High Roads split 5 years later, but Dury and piano player/ guitarist Chaz Jankel continued working together. In 1977 Dury signed with the influential punk label Stiff Records. This led to the eventual formation of the singer's backing band, The Blockheads. 1977 saw the release of his successful 'New Boots and Panties!!' LP. One track, "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll", coined a phrase that is often used to describe a rock 'n roll lifestyle.
In 1979, Dury scored his biggest hit. For "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick", he  added lyrics to a disco-flavoured track created by Jankel. The single reached #1 on the UK chart and peaked at #2 in Australia. Jankel produced the track. It was issued between albums by The Blockheads. Dury continued releasing some intriguing songs, including "Reasons to be Cheerful" and "I Want to be Straight". Jankel wrote "Ai No Corrida" which was later covered by Quincy Jones on his LP 'The Dude' (and has also made this Top 1200 listing). Dury sadly passed away in 2000, succumbing to cancer.
