New York-born singer/ songwriter Carole Bayer Sager is best known for penning major hits for others than her own solo recording output. Some of her memorable compositions include: "A Groovy Kind of Love" (the Mindbenders & Phil Collins), "Don't Cry Out Loud" (Melissa Manchester), "When I Need You" (Leo Sayer), "Nobody Does It Better" (Carly Simon), "Arthur's theme (Best That You Can Do)" (Christopher Cross) and "That's What Friends Are For" (Dionne & Friends). Her songwriter partners, across several decades, have included Peter Allen, Melissa Manchester her (ex-) husband Burt Bacharach and Bette Midler. 
"You're Moving Out Today" was penned by Sager with Bruce Roberts and Midler. The track was produced by Brooks Arthur for the singer's self titled 1977 LP. Roberts plays piano and contributes background vocals on the recording. 
The song was recorded by both Sager and Midler. The former's version was released as a single in 1977. On the US Hot 100, it only managed to reach #69. In the UK, the single peaked at #6, while in Australia, it spent 4 weeks at #1. Sager has written songs for the likes of Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson, Neil Diamond, Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin. She continues writing to this day.
