#724 DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD Santa Esmeralda starring Leroy Gomez
Record producers Nicolas Skorsky and Jean-Manuel de Scarano were French and devised the concept for Santa Esmeralda. They created a disco studio act which incorporated Spanish flavours. Their biggest hit was a cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". The song was written by Bennie Benjamin, Sol Marcus and Gloria Caldwell. It had previously been recorded in varied styles by the likes of Nina Simone (the 1964 jazz original) and The Animals. Santa Esmeralda's approach featured Latin rhythms and group member Leroy Gomez on vocals. The Euro-disco remake reached #15 in America and #7 in Australia in 1978. The disco group also covered another hit by The Animals: "The House of the Rising Sun", with a disco makeover.
