#393 WHAT NOW MY LOVE Barbra Streisand
In 1966, Barbra Streisand released a French-themed album entitled 'Je M'appelle Barbra'. It featured various songs sung entirely, or partly, en francais as well as English adaptations of French compositions. "What Now My Love" is known in France as "Et Maintenant". The original song was composed by popular French singer/songwriter Gilbert Becaud with lyricist (the so-called "Pope of French Song") Pierre Delanoe. The former scored success with the tune in 1961. English lyrics were added by Carl Sigman.
Streisand's version of "What Now My Love" begins softly with the original French lyrics, gradually building towards the chorus, which bursts out in English. The ballad intro gives way to a tres chic jazz climax.
Numerous versions of the standard exist, ranging from Frank Sinatra and Sonny & Cher to Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass and former ABBA vocalist Agnetha Faltskog. Streisand's is the interpretation I prefer because of her consummate switch between 2 languages and the ultra-cool arrangement by Ray Ellis. Ettore Stratta produced her cover version.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2 new songs are added each day (every 12 hours)  with a mid-week bonus every Wednesday.
