BEFORE IT WAS A HIT XLIX: Rockin' Robin. Continues tomorrow.
These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
Rockin’ Robin
As Michael Jackson was establishing himself as a soloist, he charted with the single "Rockin' Robin". In 1972, the young singer reached the Top 3 in both America and Britain.
Jackson's Motown hit was a remake of a 1958 hit. The first version to chart was by Bobby Day. While Jackson's take peaked at #2 on the Soul chart, Day's made it to the top. Both versions reached #2 Pop in the U.S.A.
